Your Input Needed on Guadalupe Mountains Park Proposals
Guadalupe Mountains National Park lies 100 miles east of El Paso and is a wild,
quiet, peaceful, isolated, jewel of a national park. The National Park Service is
seeking comments on three alternatives that may be included in the Draft General

Forest Service Proposes Ending Trail Between the Lakes
Hiking Only Status
The U.S. Forest Service (FS) in Sabine National Forest (SNF) has proposed re-designating
the 28 mile long, primitive, backcountry, hiking only, Trail Between the Lakes (TBTL), to
a multi-use trail that will allow horses and mountain bikes due to low use, lack of
maintenance, and low budget. (Dec 02)
Important NATIONAL FOREST ALERT
URGENT: Calls Needed to Stop Harmful Fire Bills - Vote in House Possible Next
Week
Two fire/logging bills, H.R. 5319 and H.R. 5376, have been introduced that may be voted on
in the House of Representatives next week. Each of these lawless logging bills would
increase logging of wild remote public lands. Neither would reduce fire risk or help
protect homes or communities. Both cut out the public and communities from having a say in
projects on public lands; both reduce oversight by the courts. These bills would
permanently make our environmental laws hollow when it comes to logging. (Nov 02)

Logging Assault
President Bush has unleashed an all out assault on your public forestlands (the
National Forests/Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands). Unless your U.S. Representative
and Senators hear from you, massive amounts of Pacific Northwest old-growth, Rocky
Mountain Ponderosa Pine, and diverse Southern public forestlands will be stripped by

Bush Stealth Attacks Roadless Areas: Write Now!!!
In a back door stealth attack, President Bush has proposed gutting interim
protection for roadless areas (RA) under the guise of simplifying rules and increasing
administrative flexibility. To help protect RA, your comments in opposition to this ploy
are needed by February 19, 2002. (Feb 02)

Clean Air
State Threatens to Backslide On Houston Clean Air Plan
Houston's clean air plan is at risk of being weakened further. Last year, the US
Environmental Protection Agency approved a plan to bring Houston's air quality into
compliance with the current federal health standard for ozone. This was the first time
that such a plan had been approved by the EPA, and although Houston Sierra Club felt that
it was incomplete, it did represent a major step forward. (Jul 02)

The loop to nowhere, known formally as the Grand Parkway (GP), but known by
nature lovers and fiscal conservatives as the Grand Porkway is rearing its ugly head in
Brazoria and Galveston Counties. (Oct 02)
The Grand Parkway - An Update on Segments C, E, F, and
G
The Grand Porkway (GP or Parkway) is a proposed 170 mile highway loop around
Houston. Presently, there are two complete loops (Loop 610 and Beltway) and nearly a
third loop (Highway 6/1960) that extend around Houston. The GP will waste between

On Saturday, July 20th the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club will host its
sixth annual Conservation Conference at the Armand Bayou Nature Center in Houston. The
Nature Center is located along the banks of Armand Bayou. (Jul 02)
