Annual Auction - Volunteers and Donations Needed
December 10 (Thu) - We will hold our fundraising "Live and Silent Annual Action" along with our Holiday Gathering at our December monthly General Meeting, Thursday, December 10, at 6:30 p.m. This is one of the club's biggest fundraising events. All proceeds will be used to support our local conservation and educational programs including the printing and mailing of our newsletter. We had many successful auctions in the past years, thanks to all our donors, volunteers and bidders, and we are looking forward to another successful event. We are beginning to accept donations for the auction. An early response is needed so we can publish the auction items in the upcoming issues of our Bayou Banner. Suggestions for donations would be rentals for cabins, rooms, sailboats, canoes, bicycles, etc.; gift certificates or gift cards for services, performances, merchants or restaurants; and goods such as camping equipment, crafts, artwork, or autographed books. We need volunteers prior to the event to help solicit for auction items, pick up donated items or help promote and advertise the event. Additionally we will need many volunteers on the day of the event to help with our refreshment table and setting up the event. To donate, volunteer or for more information about the auction contact Arlene Diehl at 281-252- 4639 or arlenediehl@peoplepc.com.

Why You Should Comment -
on the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Update of the 2005 Land and Water Conservation and Recreation Plan.
Although the 2005 Land and Water Conservation and Recreation Plan was intended to have a 10-year life, the agency has decided to engage the public in a mid-term update of the document. The update is meant to provide a 5-year vision for Texas Parks and Wildlife that is understandable to the public and usable by the staff. TPWD is highly visible in the arena of management of species subject to hunting and fishing regulation. It has been the focus of state park advocates in obtaining adequate funding during the last two legislative sessions. However, the agency has another responsibility of particular interest to the Sierra Club.  (September 09)

Big Thicket National Preserve Celebrates 35th Anniversary This Year
On October 11, 1974, President Gerald Ford signed a bill into law (Public Law 93-439) that created Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP). This year is the 35th anniversary of that historic day. As they say in the country "A lot of water has flowed under that bridge" since that day. Today, Texans and the People of the United States have a real natural treasure which is finally starting to get its due. Let the birthday party begin!!!  (July/Aug 09)

Sierra Club Files Lawsuit on Proposed Grand Parkway Segment E
On March 9, 2009, the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Houston against the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) due to the impacts that the proposed Grand Parkway (GP), Segment E, may have on the Houston environment. A lawsuit is an expensive, time consuming, and difficult strategy that is taken only as a last resort after weighing the situation carefully. We are now at that last resort with the proposed GP. December Program:  Annual Auction

We will hold our traditional fundraising live and silent auction and our holiday gathering at our Thursday, December 10, General Meeting, which is free and open to all members and non-members. Drinks and snacks will be served. This is a great opportunity to support your club and complete your holiday shopping while having fun. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted. A good variety of items are waiting for your bid: outdoor adventures, camping gear, handmade crafts, pottery and artwork, a variety of books (some autographed) and a whole lot more. We will be selling Sierra Club holiday cards and 2010 Sierra Club calendars. Visit our website at http://houston.sierraclub.org for a detailed listing of items. There is something for everyone. Thanks to all who have already donated to our auction. Donors will be acknowledged in the February Bayou Banner. Enchanted Rock SNA Camping
January 22-24, 2010 (Fri-Sun) - Join us for our annual camping trip to Enchanted Rock in the Texas hill country. The Rock is a huge, pink granite exfoliation dome that rises 425 feet above ground. It is one of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States. We plan to have both a backpacking and a base camping group. This outing is family friendly and well behaved dogs are ok with permission of the leader. For more information or to reserve a spot, contact Lorraine Gibson at 281-384-4104 or raineygib@aol.com.
